What are Your Pursuits?
We pursue many things--careers, degrees, education, relationships, studies etc. and the list goes on and on.  However, not all pursuits are equal.  To maintain a balanced life we can only pursue a few things at a time.  Have you ever been disappointed by something you though was worth pursuing only to discover it was a complete waste of time and energy?  Of course you have and me too!  The good thing is there is something that we can all pursue that is available to each of us.  Know what that thing is?  Wisdom.  Wisdom is what the wise man Solomon describes as the principal (first in time, place order and rank) thing.  He also adds that of things that can or could be desired nothing is to be compared to it (wisdom).  So why pursue wisdom?  Three reasons:

  • knowledge
  • understanding
  • skill

If you have ever tried ignorance then you know the value of knowledge.  If you have ever been misunderstood then you appreciate understanding.  If you have ever tried doing something you didn't know how to do then you have experienced the frustration of unskillfulness or the lack thereof.  This trio of endowments should be possessed by all but sadly only a few possess them.  Consider this analogy.  If I were to eat a meal (knowledge) but I am unable to digest (understand) the contents of the meal then I will be unable to convert the food nutrients into energy (skill).  So my point is that whatever your endeavors or pursuits you must engage life with wisdom (kus).
